What do teachers say about this resource? (3737)

I thought the variety of poetry selected for study was very comprehensive and the focus on early pre 1900 poetry, interesting. It was also nice that some of the poems had similar themes so that pupils could be encouraged to make comparisons, a key skill for their future GCSE course. I particularly liked the very inventive follow up tasks which provided pupils with an opportunity to think creatively and gives them a clear focus for doing so. I also felt the resources would give the pupils the opportunity to make mature analyses of the poetry provided. I think the focus on poetic techniques and structural choices that these materials highlight is very good and would be excellent preparation for their future study of poetry at GCSE. These materials enable pupils to develop a vocabulary for the discussion of poetry; exposing them to the key terms which are so vital to their analytical skills. The poem hand-outs are good; it is useful that there is a lot of empty space on the pages to allow for pupil annotation. This resource clearly matches the guidelines set out by the National Curriculum; the resources and tasks provided work to enhance and build pupils’ reading skills. The skills practised through the focus tasks provided enhance pupils’ ability to read for meaning and to understand how meaning is created through a combination of words, images and sounds. A comprehensive focus on the author’s craft is provided with an excellent opportunity for discussion of language choices.
