Freelance Writing Opportunity for Classroom Teachers

Work from home / in the holidays | Write around your schedule

This is a flexible, freelance opportunity for current or recent classroom music teachers to share your knowledge and enthusiasm for Music through writing and contributing to educational resources for schools and FE colleges, working from home on a project-by-project basis.

What you will achieve:

  • Experience in publishing and education sectors
  • Experience working alongside an experienced Editor
  • Develop research and planning skills to a specific project brief
  • Your own published material that will help future learners succeed in their qualifications
  • Familiarisation of teaching requirements set by examination boards
  • Experienced teachers will bring knowledge to share.
  • Newly qualified teachers and those preparing to go into teaching or management roles will gain further understanding how to structure lessons, communicate theory to students of different ages/abilities, and cover unit specifications
  • Opportunity to develop your own resource ideas

What we’re looking for:

  • Detailed, wide-ranging knowledge of Music
  • Ability to adapt and improve your method of working through feedback loops
  • Ability to communicate effectively, concisely – to write with flair and enthusiasm for your subject!

The ideal candidate will be able to apply creative strategies for teachers, taking the content students need to learn and presenting it in an accessible and digestible way.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A strong interest in your subject area (including up-to-date knowledge of any recent developments), backed up with an excellent academic record
  • Strong research and analysis skills; attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently, and to communicate ideas and knowledge with clarity
  • Write in a creative, yet clear and coherent style

Minimum Qualification Level Required

  • 2:1 (or higher) degree in Music
  • Grade A/A* in A Level Music or Distinction in Music BTEC Level 3
  • PGCE
  • Teaching experience of GCSE/BTEC/A Level/IB; (Experience teaching qualifications you are writing for requires far less research time and means you will have ideas and examples to bring into resources. Or if you will be teaching a qualification you write for in the future, then some of the writing time is time that you will have spent anyway preparing for your lessons.)

Additional Desirable Requirements

  • Experience of writing in a professional context, e.g. freelance educational writing

ZigZag Education is a Bristol-based educational publisher. We are based in a single location split over six rooms. There are approximately 25 members of staff. We are a highly focused business which creates resources such as worksheets, practice exam papers, teaching notes, digital interactive web teaching resources, etc. for secondary schools and FE colleges.

As a relatively small team we offer an informal, friendly and flexible working environment. Based in Greenway Business Centre, we have free parking and our offices back onto playing fields, providing a quiet and green setting. The offices are provided with free chilled water, milk, tea, coffee and biscuits/fruit. We make an effort to enjoy some social occasions such as a summer BBQ, Christmas dinner, bowling, picnic, and the occasional drink after work. Dress code is smart casual.

You will be working with a professional team dedicated to achieving the highest possible standards, in which every member of the team is excellent at contributing within their role. As such, you will need to demand the highest standards of yourself and have pride in what you do.

We work with hundreds of teachers and freelance authors and expert checkers who are based around the UK and abroad. The core team work from the Bristol office every day.
