Hamlet is a rewarding text to teach because it combines universally profound themes with all the action and tension of a well-made thriller, expressed in some of the finest language ever written. Students will enjoy discussing and writing about the issues of life, death, love, sex and suicide which permeate the play. Its complexity has generated a huge body of commentary, and this Comprehensive Guide provides focused, informative analysis to help students shape their responses.

What do teachers say about this resource? (9356)

I thought this resource was comprehensive, clearly informed by strong subject knowledge and well aligned with the needs of A Level English Literature students. It covers all the major assessment objectives and provides a breadth of contextual and critical material that is likely to support both class teaching and independent study.
I particularly liked the detailed scene by scene analysis, the clarity of the contextual explanations and the focus on assessment objectives. The inclusion of active learning tasks was especially helpful because it encourages students to apply knowledge rather than simply absorb it. The only aspect I liked less was the occasional repetition between sections, although I appreciate this is partly deliberate to avoid cross-referencing.
The resource enhances learning by giving students varied ways into the play. The educational value is strong because it combines close textual analysis, contextual explanation, literary approaches, thematic overviews and plot support. This range mirrors the skills required in the exams and makes the guide suitable for mixed ability groups. The consistent references to assessment objectives support exam readiness.
The resource matches the specification well because it integrates analysis of form, structure and language with contextual awareness and interpretations, all of which support the assessment objectives.

One of the best A Level resources I have reviewed. The author clearly has an excellent in-depth understanding of both the play and the students' needs, and the resource is superb... The resource extends and challenges students. It gives them a great deal of useful information but also prompts them to delve deeper and to think independently, such as through the debate prompts. Many resources spoon-feed the students and they think that's all they need to know – this one does not do that... instead it provides a wonderful scaffold for the pupils to use as a starting point... It is fantastic!

Good close analysis of key scenes and sections. Nice links to context throughout. Clear focus on AOs which is very useful. I like the active learning tasks as well. Focus on key themes and how these appear throughout the play. Debate prompts will be great for class activities... Lots of practical activities for students to work on. Close focus on AOs. Clear layout. Lots of key information. Glossary is useful too... Well selected quotations for a breadth of themes. A very useful and focused guide... Very detailed. Clear and useful. Be good as a teaching resource and will support student understanding... An excellent resource!

The summaries and layout are clear and structured... The author has a talent for making complex and convoluted plots clear, simple, and succinct. This is seen in both the single page summary and the smaller summaries of each scene... It is evident that this resource has been written by a teacher who clearly understands the needs of their students: this is evident from the way this is structured and subdivided as well as small things like dividing certain acts into 2 sections, rewriting difficult pieces of speech into student-friendly language, and clear and comprehensive terminology definitions... A useful and valuable resource which many schools, teachers, and students will benefit from
