An Inspector Calls: Weaker Learner Support Pack

All activities are linked to student-friendly assessment objectives so that students understand how their studies relate to their exam.

Aim 1 – Engage weaker learners with the text
Characters speak directly to students to summarise the plot before and after reading the play.

Aim 2 – Support their understanding of key literary aspects
Worksheets include stimulating and well-pitched activities to engage students with main events, all key characters, major themes, form and structural features, and language. Also includes a supporting PowerPoint presentation!

An excellent resource, breaking the text down into manageable activities accessible to weaker learners whilst still helping them to meet the assessment criteria

Aim 3 – Consolidate their knowledge ready for the exam

What do teachers say about this resource? (9097)

Fantastic resource that breaks down the learning for weaker learners, but is adaptable for middle/high ability learners... I loved the mind-mapping ideas and the quizzes. It was also very helpful to have simple plot summaries for those that struggle to engage with the format of a play... This is highly valuable for weaker learners, particularly the breakdown of how to achieve assessment objectives. This is targeted revision that will enable students to break down sophisticated themes... Contains everything needed to understand and revise the text.

I love this resource – what an excellent way to support, encourage, guide, teach and motivate students studying AIC... I love the fact that Sheila recounts the story at the start – this is a brilliant idea and one that I have never seen before. What a fantastic way to support weaker students... I love the diversity of activities which prevent students from becoming bored or finding lessons repetitive... I love the accessibility of the activities... The chat show idea is marvellous... The ‘essay writing’ section perfectly builds skills... This allows lower ability students to gain a strong understanding of the texts and the skills needed for the exam. It helps build confidence with the subject and this is something which is critical... Congratulations to the author on an excellent resource...A must-buy for departments all over the UK.

[This resource] helps to breakdown the text into really manageable chunks for lower attaining pupils - this is a great approach to ensuring a success for all... I like the opening of the resource where the story is retold in prose and in first person perspective. I have never seen it done like this and I think it works well for weaker achievers... I like the exemplars you provide throughout - this helps to visualise the activity and the outcomes required... I particularly like the clear breakdown for an essay structure... The indicative content is really useful.

An excellent resource, breaking the text down into manageable activities accessible to weaker learners whilst still helping them to meet the assessment criteria... There is always a danger of 'death by worksheet' but it is avoided here... The glossary is very helpful. The script using 10 quotations is clever, and the use of Sheila's story helps them to identify with the character... A valuable resource for a lower set or pupils with learning needs.

S Griffin, Retired Teacher & Peer Reviewer

A really useful resource... The use of the AOs was really helpful as this is something I always refer to when teaching GCSE and it helps to pinpoint areas that students should focus on... I teach low-level students, so it did seem to me that this was a teacher who understood the needs of students who were less able... The exam information was also extremely useful and gave a very clear breakdown of what students would have to do. Excellent guidance for teachers too... Use of tables throughout to break down ideas on characters, with page numbers and quotations is incredibly useful for revision purposes... I think the writing frames and the essay writing templates are extremely helpful for weaker students and will be a good way to enable them to build some confidence when planning their essays... The glossary is also excellent...
