What do teachers say about this resource? (8891)

A highly effective resource and I really like it. It is helpful and comprehensive in preparation for this section of the paper 1 exam. It is useful for both teachers and students as they can complete exam preparation and revision either independently or as directed by their teacher. The guide is well-organised and logical in its compilation and features a range of suitable tasks that are tied to the spec and the Assessment Objectives. The sample answers and activities attached to them to identify the AOs is also useful so that students can use them constructively. I like the clear indication of whether tasks are specifically suited to either AS or A Level only... The clear AOs references in the activities to make sure students recognise elements they should remember to include... This resource enhances learning as it provides clear links to each AO at both AS and A Level, as well as different sections of the exam paper too. It provides different activities to use as revision both independently and together as a class activity. It is useful to see sample answers that require students to engage with to understand the inclusion of the AOs in a response – it would help them to be able to apply and understand the mark scheme before looking at the indicative content. With the sample answers, it is nice to see how to develop and step up the approach to shaping answers and can help students to understand the skill of essay writing.

J Murdoch, Teacher & Peer Reviewer

I particularly liked the sample essay responses and comparison of different writing styles as it encourages self-reflection and a deeper understanding of how to attain top grades. I also thought the sharing of criteria of more and less successful answers and asking students to sort them was a simple but incredibly effective way of asking getting students to engage with what the examiner is looking for. I feel the key advantage of this resource is the injection of the ‘fun factor’ into lessons which is all too easily lost at A Level... Breaks down the topics into manageable chunks of knowledge... I actually found the variety of presentational, visual and structural devices used by the author incredibly refreshing. I think that they had considered very carefully how best to engage readers from across the ability range and had not just presented us with a wall of text to decode. Bravo! I think the resources are very clearly matches to the demands of the specification... Hugely helpful and innovative! Something as a HoD I don't often have the time to be! Hugely impressed with the creativity and pupil friendly resources available in this.

A really superb revision pack full of tasks and activities to engage students and to help consolidate their learning.

The first task – the grid – is an excellent resource for consolidation of knowledge. A great layout and something that is definitely shareable with students for them to revise independently.

Task six is particularly useful for encouraging students to engage with quotations for AO1 and AO2, this is something they often find challenging and this therefore helps provide key quotations.

The comparative tables showing the breakdowns of AOs and how to compare is really useful.

The activities are focused, varied and really excellent. There are some great tasks to encourage students to reflect on their learning and allow them to see how to use their knowledge in an examination situation. This has real educational value and would be useful to students of all abilities. The tasks could easily be set as homework tasks either at the end of the unit or after completing each poem.

There is throughout, a really key focus on assessment objectives which enables students to link each element to their learning. The resource breaks this down in a clear and focused way and encourages students to think about how they might respond in an examination to cover all of the assessment objectives.

This resource is well thought out and provides a range of directed retrieval practice strategies for students on both the one-year and two-year courses... This resource supports learning by providing example revision activities with exemplar answers for both the teacher and student... The practice questions and sample answers are the most useful part of this resource as this is an area which is lacking from the board... Moreover, the annotated essays are really useful to help guide students when approaching peer and self-review in class... The author of this pack has clearly worked very hard on this resource, and it will be appreciated by many teachers and students.

M Thresher, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer

There are nowhere near enough resources and marked essays available ... from the exam board, so this resource really fills a gap in the market. The advice is accurate... The essays section ... is exceptionally good... The replanning activities are really effective in that they provide weak answers and then enable students to mark the answers and then improve them.

K Chanter, Teacher, Examiner & Peer Reviewer

Very focused... Contains a number of interesting approaches... The varying length of samples are helpful in providing students with different ways of thinking about writing responses.
