Disaster can strike at any time - and can affect any of us. How would you cope? What would you do? How would you wish you'd been better prepared?
Whether the disaster is floods, drought, war, invasion, plague or pestilence the interconnected activities within this project give your students the opportunity to look at their own survival skills, undertake research in how others have survived disasters, think how they could construct a shelter or make their escape, isolate themselves successfully or work alongside others to build a new life. Most importantly they will stretch their imaginations and even their awareness of themselves.
All this takes place within the framework of KS3 English:
- activities involve researching, selecting and presenting information, presenting and writing in a variety of styles and evaluating what has been produced.
- All activities can be used to assess your students' skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing.

The author is obviously fascinated by the topic and has done extensive research in order to put together such an exciting, original resource... I particularly liked the varied assignments, the clear, straightforward instructions to the pupils and also the links to further reading for those who want to learn more or read more widely... this resource encourages pupils to think about issues such as the ramifications of war, the issues surrounding worldwide epidemics, survival techniques and strategies and other hard-hitting topics. On a nuts-and-bolts level, pupils are guided through varied techniques, such as poster design, newspaper writing, diary and speech writing and other useful creative and discursive methods... his resource is laid out in a clear and interesting way, with relevant, stimulating use of pictures, tables and information... matches and interprets the specification – it extensively covers the requirements of both the English and ICT Year 9 National Curriculum... I particularly like this resource because it has the flexibility for students to take control of their own learning. It has fun and imaginative ideas and activities; is attractively presented and would inspire some really interesting work... The tasks are varied... Very user friendly.
This resource is good and covers a variety of different aspects of teaching English through one project... There is a wide variety of [extracts] suitable for different-ability learners... The idea that the students have a folder and an end product gives them something to aim for which can help keep them motivated
I like the variety of tasks.. It is engaging and I like the fact that it promotes independence. It also enhances effective Internet research skills... the project lends itself to the development of both reading and writing skills. It can provide creative ways of approaching AFs and preparing students for GCSE coursework too.
