King Lear: Comprehensive Guide for IB

Language A: Literature, Part Two: Detailed Study

Suitable for both SL & HL

Madness, morality, dishonesty and, of course, the unavoidable cruelty of Shakespearian fate – this tragedy has everything you need to keep students absorbed! Detailed analysis, discussion prompts and class exercises effectively deepen students’ understanding of Shakespeare’s dark and deceitful play. Focused assessment practice helps ensure your students are fully equipped for the Part Two oral commentary!

Discussion-based tasks! Throughout: oral tasks creatively engage students with the text, improving key articulation skills and providing that essential assessment practice!

Tackles the key stages of text analysis:

  1. Walk-through
Thorough section-by-section commentary walks students through each scene
  2. Drawing it all together
In-depth discussion of whole text focuses on areas such as: characterisation, relationships, genre, themes, attitudes and values, language, form, structure, context, literary approaches
  3. Put into practice
Sample assessment materials replicate the structure of the oral commentary so students know exactly what to expect. Guiding and probing questions cater for all abilities. Plus! Discussion questions for HL students.
Thorough resource covering key aspects of the play and of tragedy. Student accessible too! Could be given to allow them to work through sections independently. Patricia Upton, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer

What do teachers say about this resource? (7054)

A very well-judged resource that was clearly aimed at the IB specification and included the right level of detail and information about the text. The clear walkthrough of each of the acts and scenes was very useful - both for pupils and teachers. I also found the Points of Debate questions and the review questions very apposite... The resource enhances learning with its particular focus on the IB specification: there are clear areas of focus on themes and relationships that would make ideal areas of interest for the IB assessments. I also felt that the resource encouraged independent learning through its student-friendly layout and could easily be used by a teacher to encourage a flipped-learning approach. The layout was clean and presentable... The focus on the IB is very impressive... This resource gave the overview of the text whilst also pointing towards various themes and concerns that could be explored... The resource was clear and succinct and perfectly aimed at its audience: it was a pleasure to read and certainly developed my insight of the text.
