To Kill a Mockingbird: Notes and Activities for KS3

Notes and activities which support the exploration of To Kill a Mockingbird for KS3, particularly for Year 9 classes preparing for GCSE studies.

This resource will help to bridge any gaps in knowledge, enjoyment or understanding with clear presentation, glossaries and manageable tasks to complete that will increase the students’ confidence.

Chapter worksheets include:
  1. Mini glossaries
  2. Cloze activity which summaries the chapter

This is a good transitional resource for Y9 students going into KS4 as the terminology used and focus on context will help develop the skills required for GCSE

Really useful as a starting point and it worked very well for the top sets... It gave a wide range of aspects to closely analyse some of which we'd not considered before

Other notes include: background on the author, character summaries, historical context and the Scottsboro Trials, glossary of literary terms

Worksheets include: pre-reading tasks, speaking and listening exercises, creative writing prompts, character, theme and symbolism exploration, crossword, and quiz.

What do teachers say about this resource? (5128)

Very impressed with the way in which this guide makes a challenging GCSE text suitable for Key Stage 3 students. Manages some of the difficult themes well and the teachers notes give appropriate guidance for teachers concerned about tackling these topics with a younger age group. Very time saving and I'm sure would be very much appreciated by teachers.

A Davenport, English Teacher and Ind. Reviewer

Very comprehensive, extremely detailed, and very informative. I particularly liked the breakdown of the AFs and the character summaries. The educational value of this resource will enhance the student's subject knowledge of this text. The layout is very useful with a structured contents page. I also liked the icons for the character summaries.

J Selwood, Teacher & Peer Reviewer

An incredibly useful resource whatever the intentions for use are e.g. as cover lessons or for experienced teachers looking to save time. It is also fantastic for people less familiar with the novel or those teaching it for the first time. I found it detailed enough without being overly verbose. I really liked the simple one page worksheet for each chapter with differentiated activities - the cloze, the questions and then the extension questions. There is also a wide selection of activities which can easily be selected from to match whatever assessment areas are being focused on in the scheme of work.

P Town, Teacher and Peer Reveiwer

This resource is very clear and well structured. This is a good transitional resource for Y9 students going into KS4 as the terminology used and focus on context will help them develop the skills required for GCSE. The worksheets encourage independent research/group research.

Easily accessible lessons and wide range of extension questions... This is excellent for students, particularly if some self-study is required!
