Writing Your Anthology for Year 7

A fully-resourced creative poetry project for Year 7.

Contains a 6-lesson Scheme of Work with homework tasks and a student booklet for individual poetry anthologies.

It is well-designed to make students enthusiastic about reading pre-1914, post-1914 and contemporary poems, analysing them, and recreating the effects in their own writing

L Kontos, Teacher & Peer Reviewer
By reading and responding to a range of poetry, from haikus to limericks to ballads, students:
  1. Develop their language skills through a wealth of varied activities
  2. Actively widen their vocabulary
  3. Recreate the effects they have learnt, in their own poetry

It enhances learning due to the detailed definitions and structural detail about each type of poem

C Barker, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer
  • Includes peer assessment – great for AfL
  • Based on modern and pre-1914 poetry

What do teachers say about this resource? (3351)

It is well-designed to make students enthusiastic about reading pre-1914, post-1914 and contemporary poems, analysing them, and recreating the effects in their own writing... I particularly liked the use of the booklet, where children can record their ‘best work’. Year 7 children really enjoy this sort of thing and it gives them real ownership of their work... The scheme not only requires students to write their own poetry, but also aims to build the skills required for analytical writing about poems required at GCSE and beyond... This resource clearly matches the guidelines set out by the National Curriculum; the resources and tasks provided work to enhance and build pupils’ writing and reading skills. The skills practised through the focus tasks provided enhance pupils’ ability to read for meaning and to understand how meaning is created through a combination of words, images and sounds. It also equips them to use techniques in their own writing.

Very good resource for Year 7 and an excellent introduction to different types of poems... Particularly liked the layout, pictures and illustrations and links to Frameworks. A complete scheme for 6 weeks with a view to extending different activities... the scheme was excellent – including frameworks so that teachers can cover these for assessment and the extension activities will help those more able to develop skills... The extension activities with dictionary definitions are excellent...The guided production of the Anthology lends itself to both understanding the poetry of others and also for the students to write their own

I enjoyed the resource... it was very well-planned and detailed... clearly linked to framework objectives which helped in creating lesson outcomes... I liked the whole idea of a poetry booklet/anthology. It was a good way of keeping everything together... It enhances learning due to the detailed definitions and structural detail about each type of poem, and then providing examples of each poem to clarify details further... easy to understand for a Year 7 student... can be linked into APP objectives.

Good introduction to the genres of poetry for KS3 - would easily work in KS2 too... Liked the detailed teacher planning and availability for interactivity in showing poems for the whole class on the IWB. Liked the student booklet - lovely photocopiable resource...Explores genre and allows pupils to take pride in the presentation of their 'best' work... Creativity and enjoyment clear

C Storm, HoD & Peer Reviewer

Lots of opportunities for pupils to do things actively/kinaesthetically, as well as more formal learning. Lots of key objectives covered. Good to see peer assessment included... Appendices are well done and organised, saving teachers time

S McGlennon, HoD & Peer Reviewer

A well-planned resource kit.... I liked the extended activities / differentiated tasks and homework tasks.
