Grammar Poems for KS3

Innovative approach to grammar teaching. Poetry is used to teach concepts such as nouns (proper, common and abstract), verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, interjections and more.

When students are having fun they are actively engaged – when they are engaged in this way, they learn more

L Winstanley, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer

This resource will help you maintain a high level of pupil interest and involvement. Many of the poems are humorous and each poem is followed by an appropriate exercise.

A refreshing way to look at grammar

L Hanton, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer
  • Explanations and tasks for each subject
  • Excellent for use with EAL students
  • Beautiful illustrations

What do teachers say about this resource? (2304)

A great idea. Grammar is always a tricky subject to teach, and this resource presents it in a way which is not only accessible but is fun... I loved the extension activities – I have students who always seem to finish their work in front of everyone else, making these extensions a godsend... I like the way this resource progresses through the different areas of grammar; it orders them strategically so that students are building on prior learning... The activities, and poems, are simple and easy to follow... When students are having fun they are actively engaged – when they are engaged in this way they learn more... The tasks are set out in an accessible way that would be great for photocopying or scanning for an interactive white board.

L Winstanley, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer

An amusing/entertaining approach to the teaching of grammar. It focuses on the simple aspects but touches on more difficult concepts such as the different forms of past tense... Easy to navigate through the material and find poems and exercises... each poem focused on one specific aspect of grammar, so the book could be dipped in to in order to address specific needs of a pupil... Gives extra practice for both EAL and monolingual English speakers on how to understand and use basic grammatical features in their own writing. Extension activities allow for differentiation... The fun element will engage pupils' interest.

D Coppard, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer

A refreshing way to look at grammar... A lot of the poems are silly and therefore entertaining. They should hold students' attention and help them to remember grammar rules... I liked the fact that this resource had clear exercises that built on the learning in each poem... the grammar topics chosen are particularly relevant to EAL students. Furthermore, the skills cover a lot of things that many students forget and need to relearn. The grammar skills build up from poem to poem... The resource meets its aim to teach grammar in a systematic and enjoyable way. It is well structured to build on each learning point and treats each grammatical device separately... a quick way to teach grammar in our restricted curriculum time.

L Hanton, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer

Very simple to understand but thorough. I liked the way it attempts to approach grammar in a fun and entertaining manner, using amusing poems to illustrate the grammatical concepts... pupils would enjoy the worksheets, which... would be useful for plenary activities to check understanding.

S Smale, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer

An interesting idea and it is obvious that a lot of thought and work has gone into it.... the use of poetry is innovative... it is original and is an alternative approach to the topic... well structured and well laid out... provides useful and interesting coverage of common terms.

M Evans, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer

It was comprehensive, and the poems were accessible... it will be very useful to pupils who speak English as a second language... The poems will help to make it memorable.

D Salles, English Teacher & Peer Reviewer

It is accessible to most native speaker learners and they would appreciate the cartoons and humour in some of the poems.

A Baiden, Teacher and Peer Reviewer

A very good idea... Very detailed and aims to teach pupils fundamental points through the medium of poetry.
