A Streetcar Named Desire: Flipped Classroom Resource for AS and A Level English Literature

A popular option owing to its relative brevity and colloquial language, A Streetcar Named Desire has much to offer a flipped classroom, including complex characters, the use of plastic theatre, and Williams’ innovative stagecraft. All of these and more are fully introduced and faithfully explored in this resource, encouraging and guiding students to conduct in-depth analysis, critical evaluation and independent literary exploration.

Students prepare at home with this vast collection of notes and activities, then reflect on key concepts back in the classroom. Innovative, seminar-style learning facilitates autonomous thinking and delivers ready-made, valuable homework tasks.

This inspires learners to engage with the devices, ideas and interpretations of the text together in class.

  • Supportive teacher section with specification information, further reading suggestions and a glossary of key terms
  • Independent learning tasks (homework) provide students with:
    • Essential background material for pre- and post-reading research on genre, context, critical reception and more!
    • Chapter summaries, engaging reading tasks and a reading log – encourages student involvement and responsibility.
  • Classroom consolidation tasks (classwork)
    • Tasks build on students’ prior reading and consolidate their understanding of the text.
    • Cover all aspects of analysis and enable directed, in-depth classroom discussion of important textual elements such as characterisation, relationships, language, themes and structure.
  • Essay-writing advice and activities – including tips on planning, writing, reading and note-taking – help students get exam-ready.

What do teachers say about this resource? (12750)

A very thorough and detailed pack... Well researched and written... It offers a full comprehensive study of the play and gives many different options of activities for teachers... I like the breadth of study in this pack and how it gives students many different areas of the play to explore and research. It has some excellent contextual detail within it and the flipped learning style of the text works for differentiated ability groups in classes. The split of the scenes into separate areas of study, with tables of terminology that connect to the scenes is helpful. I also like how there are answers at the end of the pack - very useful for newer teachers who need the guidance... This has definite educational value and would enhance any students understanding of the play. It allows for students to have a fully rounded study of the play and it covers all the AOs, which is important for flipped learning. This could be used as a catch up resource for any students who has missed a lot of study, or could be used as a homework resource alongside class study. It offers many options to the busy teacher... I would purchase this definitely - it would save a lot of time and be the perfect ‘flipped’ homework booklet for students... Excellent for revision too... This was a pleasure to review. - really well composed and written and obviously took someone a long time to craft. Well done... A top quality universal resource.

A detailed and comprehensive resource that offers teachers a wealth of activities and information to help them deliver a scheme of work on A Streetcar Named Desire. The extension tasks incorporated throughout the pack encourage students to think critically about the text, and the pre-reading tasks prepare them for key ideas/themes that will be explored in the scene... There is an effective balance between support and stretch and challenge which works particularly well... I particularly liked the tasks linked to context as these will help deepen students' knowledge beyond a surface-level understanding of the play. Additionally, the tasks which encourage students to engage with the dramatic elements of the play enhance their appreciation of the play’s craftsmanship... By providing structured activities, the pack helps to engage students more deeply with the text. The incorporation of key terminology for each scene also encourages students to utilise technical vocabulary in their discussion of the text.

Really useful for fresh ideas and approaches to studying Streetcar. Well laid out. Great to have pre-reading background material, and very detailed contextual insights too. Good to also be able to look at dramatic structure too as this is something students can find more challenging to analyse. I like the log too - so students can track / focus their independent learning before in class activities and debate / discussion... Breaks down requirements well... Breaks down language analysis well... Good advice on parts of an essay and breaking down the process - really targeted guidance... Appreciate the variety of tasks... Focus on AOs and enabling students to really understand these both independently and how they connect... An excellent resource.
