What do teachers say about this resource? (12440)

I think this resource is an excellent idea. In my school, pupils often struggle to develop their higher level listening skills and this resource will be a good addition to our bank of tasks to challenge and promote 'narrow' listening and build confidence listening independently with pupils aiming for grades 7-9. I particularly like that the tasks build up in challenge and that the passages are longer and more detailed. I think that what it does well is to promote pupils' enjoyment of listening tasks by providing a variety of more engaging tasks and low stakes listening work where they are asked to listen closely to identify vocabulary without being required to understands the whole meaning - this is often what overwhelms pupils in the higher listening papers. I like that it is a newer and up to date resource, it is difficult to access extra listening practice outside of the text books. I also like that there is a focus on grammatical structures too, rather than just topics. The mark scheme is very clear and easy to use and transcripts are provided which will be helpful as support or as a tool for review with the pupils.

I particularly liked the grammar focus section. The author’s choice of grammar topics is appropriate in the sense that they are advanced and challenging grammar topics geared to the top grade students. I also like how every grammar topic is linked to a theme taken from the New AQA specification, and how these exercises link grammar with listening skills. I also liked how varied, culturally rich, current and relevant the listening texts are, for example the one based on the “Shakira-Piqué” break up, which was a hot topic in Spain earlier on in the year, the “boda rociera”(Andalusian style wedding), la “movida madrileña”(a cultural current linked to the Transition period after Franco’s dictatorship). There is generally an adequate level of challenge for the most able students, for whom this resource is created, the grammar topics are consistent with grammar topics you would expect top grade students to master, the themes are consistent with the new 2024 spec and there is some dictation throughout, which is a new element of the new spec.
