What do teachers say about this resource? (12248)

An effective pack to help students improve their exam skills for the Power and Conflict unit... The mind-map tasks provide effective revision tasks to help students prepare for each theme and assessment objective... The student-friendly specification is clear and concise, it provides a good overview of the examination requirements... I like the short quotations that have been selected for revision flashcards. They have been well selected to include the key language features in each poem... The best aspect of this resource is the modelled answers, by annotating the answer to illustrate the use of assessment objectives it is a clear visual tool to ensure pupils are aware of the need for integrating assessment objectives throughout the essays. I think these will help with ensuring that pupils are aware of the differences between levels 4, 5 and 6... The scaffolding used in the PEAL paragraphs are helpful for low ability students... The comparison strategies are useful for introducing the idea of comparison concerning poetry... The essay planning top tips are suitable for students of all abilities and would allow for the introduction of exam writing and its further development after the mock exams... The worked-through example is very effective and could be used very well in the classroom... [This resource] would be helpful for my Year 10 class. They benefit from modeling and the exemplars will enable students to improve their writing.

A really high quality resource... The activities are all detailed and clearly focused on the assessment objectives... Lots of the activities focus on comparison skills which is really good as this is a skill many students can struggle with and the key focus of this exam... The overview table at the start is really useful and the mindmap activity which follows is a good revision activity for students... I really like the PEAL paragraph activity where students have to insert the quotes. I think this would work well with middle and lower ability students to help them engage with modelled paragraphs... The activities based on the model essays at the end are all really clear and would help students... The answers section is really useful for self/peer assessing homework/classwork activities... It’s really useful to have sample essays on ‘The Emigree’ and ‘Checking out me history’ as these poems don’t tend to have as many available resources... I’d definitely use this resource.

Well-structured and purposeful. It covers essential elements of poetry analysis — themes, quotations, techniques, and context — which are all crucial for students preparing for the GCSE English Literature exam... The combination of a summary table and an active mind-mapping task encourages both knowledge retention and higher-order thinking skills (such as thematic comparison)... Context is rich enough to demonstrate understanding but not so overwhelming that it becomes irrelevant... The mind maps push students to draw connections between poems based on shared themes — an essential exam skill... Well-aligned with the demands of the AQA GCSE English Literature specification and definitely has high educational value.

There is a good wealth of sample materials… I liked the range of activities across the resource, from writing paragraphs to annotating quotations and creating flash cards. This meant there were a wide range of opportunities for pupils to engage with the poems beyond the usual method of rereading their original annotations... This could be used alongside first teaching of the poems in Year 10 or deeper revision of them in Year 11 prior to the exam. Furthermore, the ready-to-use activities will also support non-subject specialists... The resource matches the spec effectively... A perfect example is in the annotated example essay sections where the essays have been specifically annotated to draw attention to the AOs. Beyond this, the author has broken the AOs down further so pupils can effectively see how to incorporate and meet the criteria. There is a clear level of knowledge and skill from the creator.

I liked this resource very much... Overall the quality is good and it is very informative... The sample essay is very useful... The different activities relating to the sample essays encourage students to engage with them rather than just skimming over them... Working through this resource would give students a very thorough understanding of the requirements of the exam and different ways to go about planning for and answering the essay.
