What do teachers say about this resource? (12113)

Good... I particularly like the way it is broken down into elements of stories and how it facilitates learners to analyse language in other stories in order to inform their own practice... Gives a great understanding of stories as a form, and includes some great activities that will enhance pupils’ story writing skills, as well as reading comprehension skills.

L MURRAY, Teacher & Peer Reviewer

Excellent... A carefully thought-out and well-structured resource, that is appropriate for the age group identified, and matched to the DFEE’S National Strategies for Secondary Assessment. It would work well, too, in preparation for GCSE... I particularly liked the way in which the resource encouraged a connection between the visual and the literary. Some students find it easier to understand through diagrams and through illustrations, and here, for example, they are asked to plot the narrative arc on a mountain image, and to draw the characters that are being described. I also liked the balance of individual and whole group discussion throughout, and the way in which the resource acknowledges the organic nature of lessons... I consider the main educational value of this resource is the way in which it is carefully building towards a final product: the completed story, with front cover and blurb. Every activity is designed to appeal to a range of interests and abilities, and the learning is diligently scaffolded, with writing guidance, key words, or literary techniques... Fantastic for someone starting to teach creative writing, or a NQT who (I believe) could not fail to be inspired by this resource.

An excellent resource as it maintains consistent focus on the curriculum objectives and this in turn lends authority and credibility to the SOW... This resource also provides teachers with options for activities which allows them to maintain their autonomy and choose appropriate solutions for their own class groups... The real strength of this resource is the consistent focus on the curriculum objectives which are covered in depth. As a teacher you can use the SOW with the confidence that you are meeting particular skills – there is complete transparency... The activities are varied and engaging and entirely appropriate for a KS3 audience. There are appropriate levels of support (examples provided) and challenge (additional activities) within the resources too. The texts chosen are typical KS3 reading texts and therefore appropriate to teach the key skills... Fantastic for creative writing... I would feel confident working through the different activities.

I strongly believe that this resource is very useful and handy for teachers and tutors to use when teaching KS3... I like that high quality texts have been used in this resource. The lesson overview of the scheme is really useful... This resource would help teachers with their planning when thinking of new and creative ideas for storytelling... The presentation is well laid out and easy to read.

N Patel, Teacher & Peer Reviewer

Useful... It can be taught straight from the scheme and the resources are all provided... I like the clarity of the scheme - lesson plans could be used exactly as they are written and the matching resources are clearly identified... The scheme provides a good introduction to the art of storytelling... It is also useful for a teacher or HOD who is short of time and looking for a scheme of work which can effectively be taught 'off plan'.
