What do teachers say about this resource? (11985)

Excellent. There was a very good balance between explanation, information and student tasks/activities. The suggestions for teachers in the teacher workbook were invaluable.

This resource is excellent for the student new to the AS English Language A Level as it introduces the thinking and concepts of linguistics. I would definitely [use it] at the beginning of the A Level English Language course.

F Dunn, Teacher and Peer Reviewer (previous edition)

I love this resource. This provides students and teachers with a structured, supported guide. This is invaluable to Y12 students and to teachers who are new to the A Level... I love the range of activities that the pack offers. I love that it covers EVERYTHING comprehensively and accurately... This resource will allow the teaching of A Level English Language to be enhanced. There is some innovative thinking here and some brilliant activities... Covers the methods of linguistic analysis very well... Congratulations to the author on a fantastic resource!

Useful... Beneficial for students... The different activities paired with each section were useful, and the examples that had been thought up would save teachers a lot of time. The booklet also lends itself as being an independent work booklet – it could be used as additional learning for students in their free periods/homework tasks to reinforce what has been taught in lessons... The resource would help students to do additional work on the elements that they might be struggling with. For example, a lot of my previous Y13 class struggled with active and passive voice, but I feel that the worksheet on this would have really helped them. It could also have been something that we revisited every time they said that they didn’t understand it.

N Darley, Teacher & Peer Reviewer

Offers a broad range of resources and ideas to engage students... I particularly liked the way certain passages in the text were highlighted: they made tasks easy to follow and supported teachers with their organisation and planning... The advice sections ‘Reflections’ also scaffolded tasks well and provided teachers with hints or tips on how to tackle them... There is also a broad range of activities across the board which reflect the AOs and detailed lists indicate how and why things are written... The student reflection sheets are very comprehensive and allow independent learning... The essential reading boxes were very useful for students to take ownership of their own learning... This resource enhances learning by matching closely to the AOs and articulating clearly how it does so. It then deals with aspects of the course and link them well to the AOs, which is in line with the marking advice given by AQA who advise a holistic approach at all times.

I loved it!... I think that this is pitched at just the right level for GCSE-A Level students. The teacher resources are great and I liked the website resources too... I particularly like the fact that there are video clips ready to use on the website (this saves hours of time trawling the web) but I also think that they are the sort of thing that would engage students - humorous and interesting... I think it's a perfect starting point. I am impressed by the range of resources that include visual, auditory and kinaesthetic activities but also encourage independent learning and thinking.
