Purple Hibiscus: Study Guide

for Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English

Charting the breakdown of the illusion of peace within the Achike household, Purple Hibiscus explores themes of religious intolerance, politics, violence, relationships, and the link between nature and freedom. This comprehensive Study Guide explores these themes along with Adichie’s distinctive style and use of language, the importance of various settings in the novel, and other patterns of imagery and structure.

Yet another comprehensive resource! This is an excellent study guide which has done the legwork for the teacher!

What do teachers say about this resource? (5157, 11186)

Yet another comprehensive resource! This is an excellent study guide which has done the legwork for the teacher! I took a gamble teaching this this year because the context is one which is so remote from pupils – but this examines the context in detail and provides, in pupil-friendly language, an appropriate guide with some sophisticated information. The D grade student could find this useful as well as the A*! I feel that having this as a resource prior to teaching would have cut the work I had to put in in terms of preparation. I wish I'd had this a year ago!

K Chanter, HoD & Peer Reviewer (GCSE edition)

Comprehensive and very well written. The language can be challenging at times, but just enough to stretch readers rather than lose or confuse them; hits just the right level for this age range. The learning checkpoint idea is great as it encourages readers to engage with the ideas in the text rather than just skim through. The extension tasks make differentiation much easier, especially as they start at a minimum standard and go up rather than down. That assessments are provided for both H and F tier is super-helpful... It takes learners through a general understanding of the text to actual analysis in a very manageable way. Most, if not all, my learners would be fine to work through this in independent pairs or groups with minimal guidance from me, although I would of course encourage deeper discussion where I saw opportunities. Any resource that allows this kind of self-development is a winner for me... Great work on one of my favourite texts.

A Baiden, Teacher & Peer Reviewer

Encourages students to see how the language works. This is crucial for achieving the highest grade... This resource will help students understand what the examiners are looking for and will also enable them to further their understanding of both the language and the context of the text... Beautifully presented. I like the image on the front cover and the link with the title as well as the purple borders. It looks attractive to use. I think the appearance of this resource would make it appealing to students (and teachers!)
