Getting to Know… Le gone du Chaâba

Suitable for:
  • Edexcel A Level

Ready-to-use research tasks, worksheets, background information and practice exam questions ensure comprehensive understanding of Le gone du Chaâba. Students will get to know this autobiographical novel written by Azouz Begag – about his life as a young Algerian child living in a shanty town – inside out and be fully prepared for the writing exam. The structure offers the perfect balance between guided classwork and independent study:

  • Before: Students are introduced to the socio-historical context of the novel, including colonisation, the Algerian War, the ‘Chaâba’ and the École de la Republique in the sixties, with comprehension questions, translations, true or false questions and more.
  • During:Organised by key moments in the novel, this section uses a variety of activities that engage and challenge students to ensure thorough comprehension.
  • After: Important concepts such as the themes, characters, structure, humour, language and critiques are covered to enable students to delve deeper into the novel and use analytical reasoning. Exam-questions prepare students effectively for the exam.
  • Answers are provided for all activities, including model essays and indicative content for the exam-style questions.

What do teachers say about this resource? (8019)

Excellent. There is a formidable degree of exploration on the book and on its context to fully understand all the references in it. It is really thorough and pleasantly presented. It is varied and uses the type of exercises that the exam board requires. [How does this resource enhance learning?] In every way: cultural and historical knowledge, literary analysis, multi cultural society (which is also a topic for A level), analysis of language. The step-by-step work will allow students to thoroughly grasp the meaning of the book and get to know the author.
