What do teachers say about this resource? (11332)

This resource has the aim of supporting students with consolidating learning in their second year of studying German and as such covers topics usually taught at this stage. It is easily accessible and clearly structured and therefore lends itself very well for independent study. At the end of the pack of individual worksheets there is a section with the answers for each, which could be used for self- or peer assessment or provide a useful key for teachers when marking.

The worksheets are clearly structured, divided into 8 topics: Free Time, Home, Food & Drink, Weather, Town, Festivals, Media and Daily Routine. Each topic is covered in three worksheets, each of which provides practice in vocabulary and grammar, as well as offering an extension activity for the more able, thus allowing for some differentiation.

The worksheets are photocopiable and attractively and age-appropriately presented with a clear layout and lots of images and cartoons. They provide a variety of engaging activities, ranging from simple vocabulary tasks on word level, to more complex grammar and translation activities, which set the scene for the demands of a GCSE course later on.

I particularly like the fact that each unit encourages students to work independently, but that it also allows the teacher to use the resource in class. This could prove an invaluable time-saver, especially when teacher absence requires the setting of cover work, or when looking for ideas for a quick starter or plenary activity.

The resource consolidates and develops students’ language skills and each of the worksheets is designed to get gradually more complex, thus allowing for differentiation. They start with simple vocabulary tasks, e.g. matching activities, code breakers, word searches, simple crosswords and dictionary tasks, before moving on to tasks on sentence and text level, e.g. gap-fill activities, matching tasks and simple reading comprehensions.

This pack of worksheets builds on the habits students will have developed when using the Year 7 Homework pack and helps students to progress further in their knowledge and use of grammar and grammatical terms. It provides the support students need to work independently, e.g. by offering links to online dictionaries as well as concise and to the point grammatical explanations, e.g. the formation of the perfect tense or word order in subordinate clauses. This will not only support students with consolidating vocabulary and grammar taught in class in their second year of studying German, but also lays the foundation for the GCSE course later on in their studies.

There is clarity and consistency throughout the resource. Each worksheet follows the same format, and is therefore easily accessible to students working independently. It is attractively presented with lots of colourful images and illustrations, but still packs a lot of content onto each page, as the visuals never take up too much space.

The contents page which provides an overview of the topics and individual worksheets is very helpful.

The resource covers topics and grammar usually taught in Year 8. It provides a good foundation to the requirements of the GCSE course, consolidating vocabulary and grammar, as well as providing a first introduction to the task types students will encounter in the exam.

It gives lots of opportunities for students to see useful language that can be modelled for their GCSE exams

What do teachers say about this resource? (11217)

A very useful resource: it will prove a real time-saver to the busy language teacher as well as supporting students in their studies in the final year of KS3 before embarking on their GCSE German course. This extensive resource is impressive, both in terms of topic coverage as well as thoroughness. It lists eight topics commonly taught in Year 9. The activities themselves are varied, yet traditional in most cases, ranging from simple vocabulary building, e.g. code-breaking, to gap fill, translation and comprehension, as well as activity types which students are likely to encounter in a GCSE course and the exam itself. The resource consolidates and develops students’ language skills and provides a useful bank of ready-made activities for the busy language teacher. The activities on each worksheet are designed to get gradually more complex, thus allowing for differentiation. This is further supported by the fact that each of the worksheets contains an extension activity which will stretch the more able students. Some of these are quite imaginative and unusual, designed for maximum engagement.

Overall, I thought that the resource is great to be used with year 9s , especially when they can work independently during cover lessons, setting homework or for revision at the end of the year. It contains lots of great vocabulary and language structures that would come very handy for their GCSE exams.
