Case Studies with Activities for BTEC Tech Awards (2022)

By engaging with case studies, learners develop critical thinking skills as they explore different perspectives, consider alternative solutions, and make informed judgments

A Young, T level Lead Health & Peer Reviewer

Presentations from practitioners in the fictional market town of Dunsbridge explain their work and how they help five service users. Students analyse, discuss and grow their understanding through real-world examples. Activities are tied in to each case study, readying students for assessments.

Carefully constructed to fully cover the criteria for Component 1, Component 2 and Component 3 of the BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care specification – for first teaching in 2022; assessments from 2024.

  • 12–15 captivating, well-illustrated activities, featuring versatile integration of case studies for effortless teaching.
  • Connect realistic case studies directly to relevant specification points, enabling students to apply learning within a practical context – an ideal foundation for assignments.
  • Readily available answers support simple peer- or self-assessment.

Case studies are invaluable, but I don't have time to write my own... these take that stress away!

What do teachers say about this resource? (12167)

I was pleased to see a resource for this new component. It provides a range of case studies that bring the topic to life for students and it gives the teacher a wider breadth of knowledge and understanding of the work of key practitioners. There are a range of activities that will help me to think about how to approach the component. There is a lot of content in the specification and I want to avoid it becoming repetitive for students. Using the case studies and activities in this resource will help with that. Having real-life case studies makes the component more realistic for students and shows them clearly how to apply their learning to real-life situations. This is what the component is all about so it sets them up well to achieve in their PSA. I thought it is clearly presented, with a section per page This makes it easier to use in lessons. I like the clear pictures and the inclusive nature of them. I think it matches the specification well and it provides case studies that incorporate a number of illnesses and conditions. It saves time and also gives me information that I would not necessarily have such as more in-depth roles of practitioners.

Various interactive resources available to use for students to consolidate their learning for Component 2. Case study activities will be extremely useful in preparing students for PSAs. Answers and instructions provided will help in minimising teacher workload. PSA preparation is heavily focused on note taking and lessons can seem repetitive. These activities will help to engage the students and build their knowledge and understanding through interactive activities. The activities are great... This will help in keeping low ability students engaged in activities and therefore learning. It will also bring the fun back to the subject, motivating students to try hard and ultimately enhancing their learning. Case study activities will improve application skills and are in line with the form of assessment for Component 2. Presentation and layout is clear, avoids cognitive overload, but still includes images when necessary. The resource covers key aspects of the specification and activity instructions identify which areas of the specification they work with. The key vocabulary included reflects the language used by Pearson.

A fantastic resource and highly appropriate for learners studying the BTEC Tech Award Level 1/2 in Health and Social Care. Clearly laid out, matched well to learners’ ability, and offered opportunities to stretch and challenge. The formatting was engaging, with relevant images and accessible language suitable for this level.

I particularly liked the variation of activities, which keeps learners engaged and caters to different learning styles. I also appreciated the clear key identifying whether each activity is for independent, paired, or group work—a valuable feature supporting planning and delivery.

The resource enhances learning through a clear, purposeful sequence supporting knowledge building and application. I particularly liked how it begins with starter tasks, such as defining key terminology, and gradually moves to applying knowledge through case studies and activities. Though fictional, the characters and settings were realistic and reflective of genuine scenarios, helping learners relate to the content. The wide range of activities offered meaningful opportunities to explore sectors, professionals, and their roles and responsibilities.

The use of images and colour added visual interest without being distracting, and formatting supported accessibility and engagement. The resource matches and interprets the specification well. Activities align with learning aims and assessment criteria, providing opportunities to develop knowledge and application skills. Sector-specific scenarios and realistic case studies support understanding of roles, services, and how needs are met. The progression from basic to analytical tasks mirrors qualification expectations and supports assessment preparation.

Highly beneficial for any centre delivering the qualification. This resource provides a strong foundation for teaching and learning, offering a well-rounded, engaging, and educational approach. The variety of activities and clear structure support deep understanding of health and social care concepts. I would recommend it to colleagues teaching the BTEC Tech Award Level 1/2 and even other qualifications, as it offers flexibility and a solid learning framework.

What do teachers say about this resource? (12271)

Case studies with activities allow you to think about the case study and draw information out. Case studies bring real-world relevance to the learning experience. They demonstrate how theoretical concepts are applied in professional settings, making learning more meaningful and practical. By seeing the direct impact of their knowledge, learners gain a deeper appreciation for the subject matter and are motivated to further their understanding. Case studies integrate multiple disciplines and subject areas, offering a holistic perspective on complex issues. They encourage learners to draw upon knowledge from various fields, fostering interdisciplinary thinking and the ability to make connections between different areas of study. Case studies often present complex problems or challenges that require analysis, evaluation, and decision-making. By engaging with case studies, learners develop critical thinking skills as they explore different perspectives, consider alternative solutions, and make informed judgments
