Sounds Write - Spelling & Reading Programme

Deals with the confusion that children often experience with consonant sounds when speaking, reading, spelling and writing. Targeted at ages 7-13.

This resource allows teachers and students to identify where confusion is occurring and address this systematically

A Roper, Advisory Learning Support Teacher & Peer Reviewer
  • Gives students lots of listening practice as well as sound production practice.
  • Offers students a chance to read and spell words while focusing on specific consonant sounds, thus improving spelling awareness and confidence.
  • Provides practical solutions for teachers, students, parents and learning support assistants.
  • Hits the nail on the head!

C Fields, SENCO & Peer Reviewer
  • Extension to the tried and tested and hugely successful 'Blocks' spelling and reading program, which deals with vowel sounds.

What do teachers say about this resource? (2352)

This is a very well thought out, thorough, resource. Easy to follow and presented in a clear and concise way... I particularly liked the logical progression and full explanations... This resource would help any teacher who needs to know how to help their students in a progressive, small-steps way... hits the nail on the head!... I would recommend it to others.

C Fields, SENCO & Peer Reviewer

I really like this resource. It meets an increasing need in schools as the move to inclusion and the pressures on Speech and Language Therapists means that schools need to take responsibility for some aspects of poor sound discrimination... It explains the difficulties some students face in a way that is easy to understand... I found myself thinking often of pupils I've taught who have precisely the problems described, and who I would have liked to use a resource like this with... This resource allows teachers and students to identify where confusion is occurring and address this systematically... As an advisory learning support teacher, it would be something I'd recommend to teachers.

A Roper, Advisory Learning Support Teacher & Peer Reviewer

An excellent resource for students with speech and language needs as well as for those who struggle with literacy... The teacher's pages really help with delivering the programme... it would enhance learning as the activities can be delivered in short bursts so would be ideal for times such as registration... if there were more resources like this, perhaps the students would not be faced with the difficulties they have.

Very comprehensive... It could sort out very specific difficulties for a child.

I Paton, Private Tutor & Peer Reviewer

Very thorough and detailed and addresses a particular issue most systematically... The introduction was most interesting and informative... The sentences using double consonants and 'gap vowels' are most ingenious and must have taken some invention! Indeed, the explanations as to how 'gap vowel' and double consonants affect the sound of a word were extremely clear, and could benefit many adults!... The exercises 'Rewrite onsets' could be used for oral work as well as written homework. Also to stimulate discussion about what are real words and which don't make sense... The checklists are detailed and straightforward.

G Howard, SENCO & Peer Reviewer

Really liked it, good idea.

S Crockett, SENCO & Peer Reviewer

A very good resource... It is well laid out and is in a good progressive order... It is a good assessment tool enabling teaching to specific problems in the child's learning.

A Weston, SENCO & Peer Reviewer

Could be a useful resource for all ages – including students for whom English is an additional language... Allows consolidation of phonemes
