Introducing Spoken Language in KS3

Useful to any department as it is an excellent resource... the range of tasks is great... Students will enjoy the tasks in this resource pack and there is a good range of support... the activities all have a clear focus and any student could partake in them... It would ensure that spoken language is covered consistently within your department. I especially like the task based on Halle Berry’s reaction to winning an Oscar. There is clear support for students through the use of group work, sentence stems, visual learning resources and examples. This, along with the range of tasks, will ensure students are constantly challenged and stimulated... this resource enhances learning most effectively through encouraging students to become much more self-reflective and independent. There are a range of tasks where students will be working in groups or pairs which will allow them to generate and develop ideas together. Furthermore during most of the activities there is a reflective exercise so students can evaluate how they performed and targets they need to set themselves to improve. The teacher is certainly put into the role of facilitator throughout this scheme which makes it a perfect unit to prepare your students for GCSE... The opening page clearly shows which activities meet the criteria of the new curriculum and where they link to GCSEs.

Very thorough... There is a good range of activities to choose from - and nice to see 'speaking and listening', as well as 'spoken word' is included... The range of group activities will facilitate peer learning and assessment, which can be very appealing and can engage those who might struggle with the topic without such support... It's leading KS3 pupils in the right direction, so that when it comes to GCSE English Language study, they will have good foundations for the study of spoken language and for speaking and listening... It's a complete 'no-brainer' to introduce KS3 pupils to spoken language, and this resource facilitates that very well

Given the focus on Spoken Lanugage at GCSE, it is nice to see a resource that prepares pupils at KS3... the activities are engaging and educationally valuable.. The folded paper activity (p. 3) sounds like a nice one for stimulating dialogue. Halle Berry ‘tone of voice’ activity seems like a stimulating and fun way to encourage pupils to consider tone and body language... The teaching notes/suggested answers are helpful... this resource’s focus on developing essay writing skills is extremely educationally valuable and will help prepare pupils to cope with the essay writing demands when they enter KS4. I like the balance in this resource between the focus on essay writing skills and the clear effort made to make the material fun and engaging.

A nice range of activities exploring speaking and listening with clear links to skills needed at GCSE, and even A Level Language. It builds on skills bit-by-bit and is appropriately challenging... does much to address the new skills, but regardless of what curriculum it is for, it is certainly good at raising awareness of the skills of S&L in any context... A refreshingly comprehensive resource that considers progression.

Engaging activities which act as a good introduction to Spoken Language Study and as a foundation for study at GCSE... particularly liked the chronology of the tasks and the wide range of activities offered to students... the build up of skills throughout led well to the essay preparation towards the end
