What do teachers say about this resource? (5674)

A fantastic resource. It would save a lot of work for myself and my colleagues on a weekly basis as everything has been catered for and it is something that you can'dip into' if a particular student or class is having difficulty in a specific area... I particularly like the student friendly self-levelling pages after each task set. This is excellent for the new curriculum that is aiming at students becoming more independent learners... It also compliments the idea of functional skills as it makes the student question what they have done and what they need to do to improve. It also does this gradually so that the student moves away from the familiar into the unfamiliar with ease... There is an excellent use of humour used in the explanation notes, and the fact that this resource uses knowledge from cross-curricular subjects... makes it all the more appropriate and standard-raising.... matches the new specifications extremely well, it takes on board all aspects of the new curriculum including the new specific focus on language and vocabulary. It is a great tool for eliminating the minor errors that can drive us English teachers crazy

Terrific idea... Very astute comments/instructions to parents, and politically a powerful weapon in the quest to raise levels of parent participation in education. Really, really useful... A good combination of formal and informal registers, outlining a solid and refreshingly traditional set of exercises and problems to solve. The self-marking exercises were excellent... The exercises involve a degree of 'drilling' students in basic skills and knowledge – absolutely vital, particularly for weaker students... Excellent resource... I'll definitely be using this resource.

I really liked this resource and I will definitely use it with my Year 7 pupils. I particularly liked the interesting passages that had been chosen and the fact that information was given about each one... encourages self-reflection and self-evaluation. This is such a key aspect of education at the moment and the pupils are given plenty of opportunities to comment on their own performance, to level themselves and to set themselves realistic targets... The extracts and book suggestions alone enhance learning as the pupils are introduced to a wide variety of writers and genres. The booklet also covers many of the basic skills concerns that have teachers pulling their hair out so it is a very good idea for pupils to be able to work on these skills at home in a controlled way. I thought the vocabulary section was excellent and would certainly encourage thesaurus use... Easy to read and professional-looking... I really liked the spelling section as so many of our pupils have difficulty in this area. I think the spelling rules pages were particularly effective. I also liked the way the pupils could answer questions and see exactly the level they would be on if they answered it successfully. The matrix in pupil-friendly language was also appealing.

A comprehensive and useful resource... Individual levelled activities provide some indication both to pupils and parents about what skills are required at each level... Substantial extension activities... The diagnostic 'Mark Your Own Work' self-assessment marking pages in the writing section... is a useful and engaging activity that will have a positive impact in the classroom... Spelling patterns and techniques explained in a positive, all-can-improve manner... Highlights and makes obvious what makes a particular level of work... Pupil-centred... Reflects needs of the National Curriculum and NCTs

These are the best resources I have seen from ZigZag... Time-saving and thorough... detailed work books for teaching.

E Hands, English Teacher & Customer (1st edition)

Clear and concise. The instructions are easy to follow. There is plenty of variety in the tasks set. The tasks consolidate classroom learning. The extension activities are particularly useful for higher-achieving pupils... The child-friendly statements are particularly useful. Pupils can easily identify what they need to do in order to achieve... supports the techniques/skills needed for SATs and for the development of English skills leading up to GCSE

S Freeburn, HoD & Peer Reviewer (1st edition)

This resource is very thorough and it is unlikely that students will run out of things to do!... I liked the clarity of the writing tasks... I liked the obvious differentiation in the reading tasks. Most children will enjoy accessing the tasks at their level and they can see what they have to do to achieve the next level. The breakdown of question types is useful and very relevant to SATs (select and retrieve, infer and deduce, etc.)... The grading of the reading texts as easy or medium allows some self-directed learning... Matches SATs requirements, especially in terms of question type breakdown and provides a solid basis for En2 requirements of GCSE coursework.

M Taylor, HoD & Peer Reviewer (1st edition)

Very well put together... Very pleasing indeed... an effective structure.
