What do teachers say about this resource? (3118)
The stories have been a great sucess, as some of our clients find it difficult to concentrate on longer tales. When they can recall a place similar to one of the stories we read about makes their well-being go up by degrees.
Short stories help to entertain residents with different interests at the same time... The stories also bring back memories... It is easy to handle because pages can be taken out.
The resource would enable carers to gain greater understanding and depth of knowledge about the people they are caring for. It gives the opportunity to start a conversation... I liked the fact that there was a mixture of stories and not all in the same theme.
Quick and easy activity to keep people occupied and to talk about.
It appeared very good. The stories were not too long. There was a good choice from different categories. Easy to read, some of the stories were clearly written not using very long words so the residents understood. It helped greatly with recalling events in the residents lives and promoted lots of discussion which is good for language development.
The discussion points are a great idea and will also encourage other discussions and opportunities for reminiscence. If I were in charge of activities and learning at a day care centre or residential home I would purchase this resource. They are accessible, enjoyable and stimulating. Some of the themes in the stories could also promote related activities in the centre, in addition to conversation, eg. performances, craft activities and fairs (for the knitting story). It should hopefully motivate further inclusions and perhaps writing from the residents, in addition to reading out loud or listening.
The questions, and any others that came to mind would prompt discussion, a much needed stimulus in a care home.
