Poetry of the First World War

The 15 poems have been carefully chosen to reflect different values and attitudes according to their timing in the war, the poets' experiences of war, and the gender of the poets. The pack includes investigative worksheets for students to complete during/after listening to each poem as well as tasks and activities for extended writing, research and group work. A set of detailed PowerPoint presentations are also supplied on CD-ROM.

The poems:

  • Tommy by Rudyard Kipling
  • Drummer Hodge by Thomas Hardy
  • The Soldier by Rupert Brooke
  • In Flanders Fields by John McCrae
  • Dead Man's Dump by Isaac Roseberg
  • Anthem for Doomed Youth by Wilfred Owen
  • When You See Millions Of The Mouthless Dead by Charles Sorley
  • The Fields of Flanders by Edith Nesbit
  • Spring in War-Time by Sara Teasdale

  • The Cenotaph by Charlotte Mew
  • Elegy in a Country Churchyard by G. K. Chesterton

“I thought this was a very thorough, detailed resource, and appropriate for the new specification as it looks at a range of poems and tackles them in-depth. It provides a great deal of material for the class and would certainly save a lot of time for the teacher. I would definitely purchase this resource.”

Impressively interactive and varied tasks. The way the worksheets place emphasis on listening to the poems rather than just reading them is welcome. The PowerPoints were superb, especially the questions surrounding the poems... I'm just sorry that I won't be teaching this course next year as this is a really valuable resource!
