AQA A A Level

‘What I was trying to do was use the idea of gospel truth: in a sense the gospels are a tall story told as truth, so these poems were about trying to find truth about particularly female issues, but doing it within tall stories.’ (Carol Ann Duffy)

Uncover these truths with this vast collection of student activities and accompanying teaching notes for all 21 poems. Written specifically for A Level AQA A English Literature and linked to AOs throughout, targeting students’ study and comprehension.

Not only is it obviously an excellent teaching tool (saving literally thousands of pounds in time), but I'm really enjoying the way in which it's opened up my mind to Duffy's work

What do teachers say about this resource? (11490)

This an excellent resource: both for teachers and students... It is sufficiently high level in terms of its understanding and explanation of Duffy's ideas, language and overall structure of the text as well as interesting links to feminist ideas... before each group of poems; the grids/work sheets; the glossary; the careful movement through the text and the questions. The student-friendly explanations of the AOs were very good indeed... Extremely strong enhancement of learning (for teachers and students). High level of clear and confident explanations which can be adapted for a wide range of learners. First class educational value throughout. Very impressive. Makes me want to teach it!!!... Excellent layout: nicely repeated layout in terms of consistency. Good debates to open each section. Good grids and questions per stanza; nice glossary; exam questions. Good use of teachers' notes at every point... Absolutely spot on. This is an essential guide to teaching this new choice of text. I couldn't do it without this guide!!!... All-round first class resource. Well done to the writer.

An amazing resource that is incredibly detailed, well planned [and] thorough... It has been written by a very competent English teacher!... I like the way that the resource has been organised around thematic links. This is a very logical way to teach the poems, and helps with the comparison element which is highly relevant for the AO's tested in the exam. I like how thorough the questions are and how each poem is probed fully. I feel that students would have an excellent understanding of all of the poems after using this. There was nothing I disliked about the resource... Excellent connections to the exam boar ... The possible essay questions offer endless revision opportunities and the phraseology echoes the exam questions used by AQA perfectly. Comparison is embedded throughout and students are encouraged to make links constantly... I love it...I'm impressed!

I am appreciating AND ENJOYING!!! the Duffy resource pack. Not only is it obviously an excellent teaching tool (saving literally thousands of pounds in time), but I'm really enjoying the way in which it's opened up my mind to Duffy's work. I can honestly say I enjoy reading the resources each week in my pre lesson prep. It's the best teaching pack I've ever owned.

A very impressive resource! Can be hard to locate resources on Feminine Gospels and this resource is comprehensive and will be very useful. Introduction is very clear – role of Feminine Gospels in AQA exams is concisely conveyed – good for students and teachers new to teaching the spec... Introduction is engaging – lots to consider. Also the pre-reading material is fantastic – very detailed and clear. Very well structured and comprehensive – so much information packed in. Also detailed analysis of poems and well considered tasks to complete whilst studying the poems and then analysing the collection as a whole and the focus of essay questions. Activities offer both consolidation and challenge – good to have answers to refer to for further ideas too. Teacher notes are very useful and clear. Inclusion of information about the structure of the collection is very useful. Model answers are fantastic... Very focused on demands of the course, enabling students to meet the criteria for A/A* as well as consolidating the lower end to ensure all is clear and linked to demands of mark scheme... Like the information on context too... Challenge increases throughout. Nice breadth of activities, and a lot is included... Clearly laid out... Matches and interprets the specification very well: Very clear introduction... Breaks down what each of the AOs means in detail – very clear for students... A fantastic resource. Very thorough, and many angles considered – very useful.

A well considered and comprehensive resource that covered all of the text very effectively... The tasks on the poems were very effective - particularly the enriching your response sections. Great for differentiation... This resource has grouped the poems together very well and has a very sharp focus on the examination and the skills/techniques the students will need to work on in preparation for it... The presentation and layout is very good - easy to follow... Matches the specification very effectively. There are also a number of useful tips on how to approach the examination... This is an excellent resource...Well thought out, detailed and with a range of tasks

Excellent... It took [away] all the worry of teaching a new text which no one in the department had studied or taught before... Excellent suggestions for student activities... It provides teaching notes which are very informative... It is well worth the money because it supports the planning of lessons very effectively.

Very good: full and detailed with good contextual info re Duffy as well as attitudes and concepts; useful teacher notes and question sheets... The question sheets focus attention on form, structure, language, while also offering some open questions for debate...Saves lots of prep time, but also very adaptable for specific needs of students and purpose.

I liked the detailed coverage of the Gospels poems and also the relevance of the activities to the AOs. It was comprehensive and clear and useful too... Facilitates exam practice and furthers knowledge of poetry in general with the additional mention of techniques and context... Student friendly and the activities would be easy for them to engage with... Matches the AOs very well for the AQA A spec and the exam questions are in clearly line with the exam paper and provide good practice.
