Area of Study E: Into the Twentieth Century

This pack covers the period of artistic splintering and subsequent merging of pop into its multifaceted subgenres with its new song structures, new rhythms and new technologies.

Music from 1895–1935 is some of the most challenging to analyse by ear. Provide plenty of opportunity to practise on diverse unfamiliar extracts by Debussy, Ravel, Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Poulenc. Plus! Three chapters scaffold for success in the tricky 5-mark questions!

The activities and question papers offer good opportunities for learning and thoughtful reinforcement but information could be more detailed, wider in scope and more informative.
