    • Geographical Variation: UK Accent and Dialect, Global Varieties of English
    • Research and Theory on Variation
    • Attitudes to Variation
  2. Language Change
    • Background
    • Key Periods
    • The Contemporary Period
    • Theories
    • Attitudes to Change
    • Language Change and Discourse in the Media
  3. Exam Preparation

Student-friendly notes, classroom and homework activities to develop understanding of the topic of Language Variation and Change, and how to apply that knowledge in the ENGA3 exam.

The activities encourage research and exploration of different varieties of English and, importantly, target:

  • Analysis of unseen text/data
  • Discussion of principles of variation and change
  • Linking theory/research to analysis
  • How to apply knowledge in Section A and B of the exam

Comprehensive, clear, concise and easy-to-use, it covers all aspects of language variation and change and works hard to answer most of the questions students will have on the exam.

It is much clearer to follow than the standard course books and revision guides I've seen

What do teachers say about this resource? (5112)

I wish I'd had it previously when helping A/AS level students. It is much clearer to follow than the standard course books and revision guides I've seen. It's a resource any teacher or tutor would find a pleasure to use. I was extremely impressed. I particularly liked it because it encourages learning in context, rather than merely helping students to pass. It will considerably boost any students knowledge and confidence as it offers suggestions on addressing and overcoming specific fears or problem areas. It matches and interprets the specification extremely well, covering all aspects step by step in a very user friendly way. It prepares students for course work, assessments and examinations while encouraging students to research and relate what is studied to their own experience and knowledge.

Superb resource. It matches ENGA3 perfectly. It highlighted each topic and the main facts and theorists to include with assumptions on how the questions might be answered, and then how to answer. Sample questions and details on how to tackle each bullet point to achieve maximim marks is so useful. Also the required Theorists and their beliefs are clear with blank sheets in order to revise. A superb resource which answers most of the questions that would be asked by a student taking ENGA3.

I enjoyed this resource as there was comprehensive coverage of the varieties needed to utilise in the exam. I would purchase this as it is useful for revision activities for students and could even be given to them at the end of the course as a revision book. There are some great activities for students and good suggestions for focuses e.g the way the syntax framework can be applied to articles in the exam.
