Superhero Genre Revision Guide for GCSE WJEC Film Studies (2013-2017 exams)

Ensure students are fully prepared for the exam, from key terms to analysis and pre-production skills. Workbook style enables active revision, encouraging creative and original responses from students.

Really good… I particularly like the match up of camera angles and shots and the following activity where shots are analysed and justified. The exam at the end is brilliant with sample answers and the quality of the pages and examples is impressive... the mark schemes are excellent and allow students to self-assess and peer-assess their work. S Derrick, Head of Department & Independent Reviewer

What do teachers have to say about this resource? (5062)
'I really liked the resource. The activities all link to the exam and it encourages students to engage with the genre of superhero films... The structure of the booklet means that the students are guided through each part of the exam... The tasks are engaging but with a strong focus on how to gain top marks, plenty of opportunity to do peer / self assessment using the grade descriptors which are nicely placed after each question... I liked the way it is pitched at a high level so as a teacher, I would be able to pick and choose which activities suit each student. For the more advanced subjects such as narrative theory it works as a starting point for those more able students to go and investigate and research further to develop their understanding more... The resource has been made with the WJEC specification very much at the forefront. It is an excellent accompaniment to teaching and also works as an excellent revision pack. It guides students (and teachers new to the subject) through the exam expectations, yet allows the students to be creative and enjoy the tasks.'– E Richardson, Film Teacher & Independent Reviewer
'I like the resource and I like the activities.'S Crawte, Head of Media Studies & Independent Reviewer
'This is a very detailed yet easy to follow resource... I paricularly like the clear glossary in the teacher section with quick reference of films which the examples can be found... A clear breakdown of the markscheme and outline of the exam, both are student freindly and easy to understand... the tasks are of a wide variety with possibility to adapt to suit other films for extension activiteis. Students will enjoy the variety of tasks and understand the tasks as they are presented clearly and in a student friendly fashion... this resources accompanies the specification well, offering great detail to aid revision and retention for the students.'E Richardson, Media Teacher & Independent Reviewer
'This is a well thought out resource that is simply, clear and to the point with a wide range of tasks and activities designed for individual and group learning and revision... I like the simplicity of this work booklet, it isn't over complicated for lower ability students, yet the questions have scope for higher ability students to develop their answers... I think that some of the tasks set within this work booklet would make excellent plenaries and starter activities as they are simply yet fun whilst some of the questions lend themselves well to homework activities. This would be of great help for lesson planning and extending students learning... I think this would not only benefit GCSE but as a refresher for A level film as well, as it provides clear individual tasks on key words and concepts from the spec.'E Richardson, Media Teacher & Independent Reviewer
'The activities are simple, clear to use and therefore will be clear to explain to an all-ability class, and be undertaken by students with little confusion. I particularly like the fact that bit-by-bit it builds the students' knowledge and understanding of the technical terms through a healthy mix of theoretical and practical tasks... This resource will enable students to feel that they have a bank of knowledge when it finally comes to producing something of their own. This will therefore reap benefits... I feel that this workbook offers the teacher the chance to drop in starter activities by using some of the quicker tasks in this book which will then lead on nicely to whole lesson plans made around the spec... It's good to see a resource that thinks actively about tasks which ensure learning. This is a resource that takes away the 'technical' and replaces it with 'fun'.'G Scarfe, Media Subject Specialist & Independent Reviewer
'Really good; I feel that the mark schemes are excellent and allow students to self-assess and peer-assess their work. The revision tips are also a great feature; having the 20 pages of pre-amble about the exam and what you need to know is really effective for the ones I teach that panic! I like the match up of camera angles and shots on pages 23/24 and the following activity where shots are analysed and justified. The exam at the end is brilliant with sample answers and the quality of the pages and examples is impressive...I'm finding it hard to find faults!! The mark schemes are excellent and useful at the end for peer and self-assessment... This is an excellent revision resource but this is perfect for teaching as we're doing it as a one year course and are unsure of the demands and this appears to be an all-inclusive resource... it's comprehensive and covers everything just in case... we could have done with at the start of the course!!'S Derrick, Head of Department & Independent Reviewer
