A Level AQA Learning Grids

Very good, especially for weaker students… gets students READING the textbook.

A Neal, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer

A brilliant new idea for supporting weaker students. Students have to read their textbook/notes to complete a grid of questions in exact specification order. Cross-referenced to both Nelson Thornes and Philip Allan textbooks to ensure a structured reading of either textbook.

A godsend for those students who find learning difficult and for the less willing. Leads to active learning, identification of key points & the structuring of information.

  • The structured method of learning grids is of great value to students, especially if they find it difficult to absorb all the information in class.
  • Case study factsheets for all required case studies.
  • Fills in the gaps to ensure the whole specification is covered!
  • An easy-to-set, yet valuable homework option.
  • Requires minimal preparation and interaction from the teacher — great for cover lessons!
  • Results in a comprehensive set of revision notes.

What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4683)
'A very useful resource as a revision tool for students to use as they work through the topic or as summative revision prior to their exam. I thought the concept is excellent and the benefits to students will be high... The resource runs very closely to the specification and is very current. I also like the fact that answer sheets are provided as this is a useful way for teachers to check off understanding and pupils could even use this as revision notes... This resource will make it much easier for pupils who struggle with the concept of revision by keeping their focus on the key terms, processes and case studies. This should definitely help improve AS grades... This resource runs exactly with the AQA AS coastal environments specification making it very useful for teachers and students. There are spaces left for case studies to be applied which allows students to insert the particular study that they undertook.'M Finlay, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4682)
"Really liked it... can see it being really useful on a number of levels... The range of the specification covered, but put across in a straightforward manner... Really helpful for students who are struggling with new concepts - will provide them with a safety net. Also, due to the fact that it covers all the basics it will give students confidence that they have understood all the main points... Clearly laid out, easily photocopiable... diagrams are clear."V Burgess, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4738)
'An excellent resource, it covers the entire course in manageable bite-sized chunks. A range of questions, and resource styles is used (e.g. not just prose stimuli). A well-sized resource - not too long, but not too short... The structure is super... I like the way the noting can be revised from directly - for weaker students this is a valuable resource. The layout of the 'case-study' sections is also excellent... For weaker students, this is exceptional, as it allows basic learning of the concepts, but also revision at the same time - for example the definitions section (and those requiring multiple answers of similar, yet different phrases/concepts). The educational value is therefore high, as it can be used for initial learning, and revision... It matches the specification exactly - using key terms and concepts word-for-word which is very helpful.'H Waddington, Geography Teacher & Independent Reviewer
'A very good resource, especially for weaker students and it actually gets the students reading the text book... I like the way it follows the specification directly. Questions are easy to understand and there is a range of stretching questions... it enhances learning and encourages students to read the text book. It clarifies learning, without asking students to answer examination type questions... It checks students understanding on all aspects of the syllabus.'A Neal, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
'A useful resource which will allow teachers to monitor the progress at which pupils are reading. Also provides a basic framework for pupils to complete the reading- a structure which is often missing for KS5 pupils... ensures that a basic minimum level of reading takes place which is easy to monitor for teachers - particularly where pupils have been heavily spoon-fed at KS4 this provides a good structure for them.'A Ali, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4686)
'Easy to follow grid format with clear indications to relevant textbook sections, a good resource which will allow pupils to carry out a minimum level of reading for the AS unit.'A Ali, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4739)
'A really useful resource that can be used as a foundation for the students' learning. I will use it a preparation set for the students starting the unit. Ensuring that they do their reading... I particularly like the fact that it covers the specifictaion. Students can peer assess from the markscheme. it ensures that they are reading and directs students to the appropriate page... It will help the students process the information and improve their comprehension of the unit... A very well laid out piece of work in a good chronological order. It is student friendly... It is an exact match with the specification and I would feel confident that when it was completed the students would have made progress.' T Dixon, Head of Geography, Examiner & Independent Reviewer
"A very useful revision tool for students studying the health module and also a useful planning aid for teachers. It gives a clear outline of both requirements and content for the module... Easily accessible layout... The learning grid gives clear and concise answers, giving a range of approaches (for example five reasons as to why we study health). The case studies are broken down so that it is clear to students what they need to be aware of. This is much better than other resources where the information is expected as a whole; the clear break down helps students to adapt case studies to specific questions. Case studies are broken down into manageable chunks (for example the obesity example is split into sections on BMI, diet, risk factors, etc). This means that when pupils are filling in their grid they have guidance on all of the aspects they need to consider and will help them to decide upon relevant information to include according to the exam question given, rather than an unstructured response. This will assist them in achieving higher levels."K Rowley, Head of Department & Independent Reviewer
'A very useful resource and it is great to have the answers provided as well so students can do some self assessment of their answers. Optional AS and A2 topics are not well resourced and this is very welcome for teachers who are under pressure for time... I like the fact this resource covers the specification precisely and would be an excellent tool for creating notes or for revision at the end of the unit... The pupils will be encouraged to look closely at the specification and examine all the key areas. It provides a very useful summary of the topic when each part is complete... This learning grid matches the specification exactly it would provide a very useful summary of the topic and also be very helpful just before the exam as a final revision over the main points... The content is excellent... students would find it very helpful.'M Finlay, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4684)
'A really good introduction to deserts for the students and will provide a really good foundation to their learning... well structured... It clearly covers all the unit and provides students some clear structure to their summary notes... Could be used to ensure for active reading and make sure all students are completing independent study.'T Dixon, Head of Geography, Examiner & Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4685)
'Very comprehensive and detailed... It ensures that students have a comprehensive set of notes that they can refer to during original teaching and a good set of revision notes... The detail covered is good, and makes the student look for the answers.'N Pedoe, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
'Clearly laid out, comprehensive. Useful having new sub-topics on a new page... Very step by step. Good mix of getting students to concisely define, but also think through the information... Gives students ownership of gathering knowledge and key terminology allowing the teacher to focus on application and skills, which are higher order and so therefore likely to allow students to gain higher grades... Matches very well. I particularly like the case study grids for the 2 case studies that need to be done from a choice of 4 - this makes it very customizeable for schools.'V Burgess, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
"A great revision tool for AS students... I like the fact answers are provided as this greatly assists teachers in marking the work with students able to self assess their own content. The questions are straightforward and cover the whole specification very well... Students at AS sometimes do not know where to start with revision this is a huge help to getting revision started and would be a beneficial resource once complete to use for last minute overviews of the topic... I really think some of my pupils would benefit - especially those on C/D border line... Ability to put this on VLE is excellent."M Finlay, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
"Very good, especially for weaker students. A good activity for homework, gets students READING the text book... Case study cards are good and will aid students revision... Good homework or follow up activity... Questions follow the syllabus closely and require students to read information in the text book."A Neal, HoD & Independent Reviewer
"Would be useful as a homework task to support set reading... Will support pupils' key reading."— A Ali, Hod & Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4681)
'An excellent detailed and comprehensive set of notes can be made using the resource. Covers all aspects of the topic, allowing students to make detailed notes for revision and to cover it first time. Also good for students who have missed sessions... Very good for independent learning. It also reminds students to look at all sections of the spec and check that they have covered it all... Very closely matches the specification.'N Pedoe, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
"It clearly provides students with the basics they need for this topic and it can be useful to reinforce learning... Good coverage of the specification requirements... I feel the coverage is good, and there is effective interpretation of the spec."V Burgess, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
"It is a resource that will enable weaker students to gain a clearer understanding, and to be more organised. I would be particularly useful for revision... I liked the detailed labelling of the diagrams on page 3 and 7. This would allow them to work with their notes to improve their understanding of more complex ideas... It is very accessible, allowing even the weakest candidate to gain confidence that he knows the basics. It helps the candidates lay the information out in manageable chunks and bullet points... Sub-heading and sections are excellent."A Wingfield Digby, Geography Teacher & Independent Reviewer
"Comprehensive overview of the unit... a useful resource to support required reading at AS... Clear and structured."A Ali, HoD & Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (5133)
'I have used learning grids for some other topics at AS and A2 and find them excellent to use as a summary of learning and as ahomework tool. This learning grid covers all the areas of the specifiaction for this topic... I like the fact that the pupils write answers on the booklet and it can be used for revision. I also love the fact that an answer booklet is given for the teachers as it helps me as a teacher to gain good case study ideas and detail on how to answer different styles of questionning... This resource will be excellent for students who are struggling with the breath of content at A level - it keeps the content specific to the specification and gives them just enough information to be able to answer any question satisfactorily. Better students will then go beyond this to research further and add to the detail given... The resource covers each key part of the specification and in itself offers a very comprehensive base for students to revise from, they can then build on this to push their answers into a higher mark band with added depth and personal knowledge... this resource is specific and focuses exactly on what the students need to cover for their exam.'– M Finlay, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
'It gives a good foundation for the students/// I like the fact that it has clear, with directed reading areas. Very useful for independent study... It covers the specification completely.'– T Dixon, Head of Geography, examiner and independent reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (5385)
This is an excellent resource. The questions are clear and refer directly to pages within the two key text books. This ensures that the notes that they create are accurate and will be of use during revision for examinations - P Grinter, Teacher and Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (5437)
'Useful questions to complete within the grid structure. All aspects of the specification covered, including information concerning examples of specific biomes required by the examination board... Allowing students to research and complete information requires the processing and understanding of information, which should lead to evidence of learning having taken place... Lay out and task requirements are clear.'– P Grinter, Geography Teacher & Independent Reviewer
'A very useful resource, with various biomes covered. Allows for topics to be covered in a systematic way, building on past learning... A variety of learning styles are catered for. The tasks are clear and straightforward, but thoroughly test and review each topic areas within ecosystems. Breaks each topic down into its component parts, which allows the learner to increase work on challenging areas if required... The resource allows the learner to use the text books to complete the answers for learning purposes, but also allows the same grids to be used for testing or revision. Which means that the resource can be used at different times of the year for different purposes... The learning grid covers the topics required by the specification in and clear and innovative way using a variety of tasks.'
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4814)
'An excellent learning resource which students can complete as they move through the topic or as revision before their exam... I especially like the fact their is a copy with answers as these can be used by the class teacher to mark off student work or as a teaching aid projecting it onto the whiteboard for whole class discussion... This resource will enhance learning especially for students who struggle with summarising notes and find revision difficult. It provides all the essentail information required in the topic and more able students can use it as a basis to build on further detail... follows the specification exactly and provides a valuable revision tool for students and for teachers to check understanding of the topic. The key areas are all logically followed through and the space for case studies allows students to think through the necessary information they may need in their exam... a valuable resource for any A2 teacher.'M Finlay, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
'Fantastic resource, really comprehensive covering the entire AQA section on tectonics. Great for completing alongside classwork, as homework tasks or for revision... Easy to use and can be given to students as a whole activity or broken down into lessons... It follows the AQA specification perfectly, using the same terminology to ensure students are clear on what they need to know... Tests understanding of all key aspects of the course with a variety of short focused questions and more open questions. It also tests knowledge of case studies.'L Keeley, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (4813)
'The resource covers all aspects of the AQA GEOG3 course on Weather and Climate and therefore serves as a good summary of the key points. It covers a great deal of factual detail, much of which could be used to support a student's learning... The organisation of the resource is logical and therefore easy to use for students. There is a clear linkage between the different components of the specification. Good use of specific points or fact to support the points made. The level of questioning has good variation in use of command words. Bullet point answers provide a clear and easy to use summary for students for the provision of the main facts... a very helpful guide to a Special Needs student or one who struggles to organise notes. Equally it would provide a good support (certainly the answer template) to students aiming for D-B grade... The layout easy to follow and in a clear order in line with the specification. It therefore provides a very helpful guide to student revision... The resource provides an excellent support to the specification as it covers all aspects of it. It is also broken down into manageable pieces which help the student focus on the areas where they may have weakness. The case studies provide clear specific detail to support student understanding.'M Parham, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
'A very good resource that focuses the students attention on key concepts on weather and climate... [using this] resource would help the students build a sound knowledge base on weather and climate phenomena and processes associated. The use of illustrations in the form of photographs, diagrams and graphs has greatly enhance the geographical feel tof the resource. This is highly commended... Presentation in boxes categorises knowledge in context... Questions based on the stimulus materials: This is a very good technique... Arrangement of answers replicates the question booklet making completion of boxes of missing information very easy.'I Dambudzo, Geography Teacher, Examiner and Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (5296)
'Very comprehensive and aware of gaps that the textbooks don't cover... Really liked the use of photos to give students change to put into practice some of the knowledge they have acquired and also to break up the writing and defining - appealing to visual learners... I liked the fact that on the whole, case studies weren't named allowing the resource to be flexible and able to fit in with whatever case study a teacher uses... Provides structure for note taking and opportunities to apply learning in some places... Very comprehensive and the suggestions made at the start for teachers are helpful to guide them when making use of the resource in relation to using their own case studies.'– V Burgess, Head of Geography & Independent Reviewer
'A very useful resource which is clearly set out in a table format which will help organise student understanding of the topic. It is helpful to have separate question and answer sheets, students can then peer or self mark their responses... I liked the good mixture of question types and in depth answers. A2 level needs this kind of specifics. I really liked the case study check list as made it clear what was needed from the case studies... It can be used in addition to lessons as a homework or to consolidate learning... I think it supports weaker and less organised students the most... the specification is interpreted well and followed closely.'– J Baston, Lecturer in Geography & Independent Reviewer
'Well organised, good referencing to text book, systematic questioning. Interesting photographs and layout... This resource is accessible to all students, it allows weaker students to identify areas which needs attention as well as stretching the more able... This resource is directed to address all of the topic areas which are covered by the specification and text books. This will permit subject knowledge and examples to be gained and then used in examination conditions.'– P Grinter, Geography Lecturer & Independent Reviewer
