What do teachers have to say about this resource? (3901)
Really useful in terms of suggesting ways to approach the teaching of this new poetry cluster, providing notes on each poem as well as guidance on exam questions and even a sample essay to use with the students AND suggestions on how this model response can be improved further - great stuff!C Loyden, Teacher and Independent Reviewer
'Excellent resource with detailed analysis on the poems. I liked the "ideas leading into" the poems to give the students some background to the poet and poem itself, and providing definitions of poetic techniques which they might use is very beneficial. The teaching ideas and analysis will be very helpful.'S Fallon, English Teacher, Independent Reviewer
'A very well researched and thought out guide. I liked the way the author has given the teacher a good outline of what to cover in a lesson and how to extend the students understanding with more kinaesthetic or visual activities. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. It has a lot of great ways to deliver, examine and compare the poems.'E Russell, English Teacher, Independent Reviewer
'[I particularly like] the variety of teaching ideas and enthusiasm for the poetry; the flexibility and support which it offers to teachers; consistently helpful commentaries on the poems and a clear focus on teaching. It will encourage students to enjoy the poems through the variety of tasks. The comparative element is especially strong and essential to the assessment task. [It matched the specification] brilliantly. The sample essays and comments are a real strength, as are the excellent comparative tasks.' M Courtney-Holt, English Lecturer and Independent Reviewer
'I liked the way it summarised very briefly each poem which is most useful as a starting point. As per the other publications it was comprehensive and clear. Again, it supports the lower ability students (and teachers!) while offering enough to extend the more able.' A Baiden, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (3903)
'It is well constructed and clear. Every stage is straightforward with a clear 'pathway' through the spec. [It matches and interprets the specification] extremely well. The AO's are highlighted very clearly and make it very easy to point students in the right direction for study. A great resource.'J Churchill, English Teacher, Independent Reviewer
'The teaching ideas are imaginative and will engage the students' interest - and help them to really get inside the poetry and understand its form, language features and message. It is clearly linked to AOs. This resource is great when it comes to enhancing the students' understanding of and interest in the poetry.'A Barnett, English Examiner & Teacher, Independent Reviewer
'I liked it, I thought it was extremely clear and well set up. It would be a very useful classroom resource and save teachers who are dealing with the new specifications a lot of valuable time. I liked the suggested approaches as sometimes teachers get stuck in a personal teaching rut, it is nice to have some different ways in suggested. I liked the clear outlay of the lesson plans. It covers the poems in detail and the content of the guide would lead to a solid understanding of the poems. Sample essays are always very useful for use in the classroom.' N Worgan, English Teacher, Independent Reviewer
'Excellent. It is incredibly dense and filled with a whole range of good teaching ideas and activities. I would be confident that I have covered the poems in detail if I were to tackle them using this resource — which I do plan to do. Definitely would give students a thorough understanding of each poem in this batch and challenge them to think through some of the key themes and issues in each poem. Matches the specification exactly — clearly covers the conflict poems for AQA Literature. My compliments to the author.' N Stirk, English Teacher, Independent Reviewer
'I liked the guidance and analysis of each poem with suggested lesson plans and background on each poet and the relevance to the poem. It is superb! The definitions of words/phrases and commentary will help all teachers approaching this Anthology and the activities are excellent to increase knowledge and understanding. The illustrations and worksheets on Activities are brilliant. It matches well and the Assessment Objectives at the top informing the lesson plan ideas helps the teacher for assessment purposes and to teach with the AO`s in mind. The analysis of the poems with background etc helps the student to understand the poems themselves and poet`s intention. The comparison of poems is excellent. This is useful for exam revision to increase knowledge of the poems. Also the sample essays an excellent idea as these have proved invaluable at A Level. An excellent resource.' S Fallon, English teacher and Independent Reviwer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (3902)
"The resource is detailed and excellent as an accompaniment to the AQA Anthology Places cluster. It is clear to navigate with the poems dealt with in the order in which they appear in the anthology. Each poem is dealt with in the same amount of detail and the resource follows a clear structure, making it easy for the teacher or student to find the information they require. The resource could be used in two ways which both enhance learning as a student pack which could accompany lessons or as a homework / revision resource; or as a way of informing the teacher about the poems." R Smart, English teacher and ind. reviewer
'Superb; this will be so useful. Excellent guidance and analysis of each poem's theme and language. It matches the specification brilliantly.'S Fallon, English Teacher, Independent Reviewer
'I liked it a lot. A great starting point for approaching this spec. It allows students to work out meaning for themselves and come to their own conclusions. It is not overly dictating. It is obviously tailored to the spec and so fits well. The section at the end containing guidance on how to approach the exam, and the glossary, are very helpful and clear.' A Baiden, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
'This is a useful and accessible resource which could easily be adapted to suit the needs of specific groups and/or individuals. I particularly liked the division between contemporary/heritage poems for quick reference, the exam materials and sample essays and the activities. The tips for students and the variety of activities are very good. I also thought the weblinks were good and provided quick access to further research. It matches GCSE new spec very well [and is] a very helpful and adaptable resource.' S Jones, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
'Excellent, extremely thorough with a range of interesting activities for each poem. From what I know of the new spec this resource would be a very good match. There is an excellent focus on the poems; you would feel confident that your pupils were well equipped to deal with exam questions after working through each poem using some of the lessons and ideas.' N Stirk, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
What do teachers have to say about this resource? (3904)
"This resource matches the specification and compliments the resources available from AQA. I've found this resource very helpful for my top set literature class. The commentaries are excellent, not only to students but for teachers new to this course. All of the material is clear and I can give my students extracts to take home and read, confidently knowing they can access the material. " K Greaves, English Teacher and Satisfied Customer
'A very useful resource. The Study Guide contained information to each poem which is crucial in understanding the poem and getting an A* in English Literature.'G Wooller, English Teacher, Independent Reviewer
A Baiden, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
'This resource is inspiring and is clearly written by someone who has a deep knowledge and understanding of the poems. Provides a complete, one-stop resource for teachers looking for a way-in to teaching the new poems. As a teacher starting out with the new anthology this resource removes the fear of the "new" after years of the old Anthology. This resource would undoubtedly give me the confidence to teach the poems to the pupils in an interesting way which would in turn enhance their own learning.' S Mann, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
'A well thought out and very useful resource for the new specification — certainly felt it would be worth investing in even in draft format because the author has already done a lot of work which staff don’t necessarily have time to do! I like the well-structured, clear lesson plans which could really support the work of less experienced staff in delivering this part of the course. Good range of activities within the lessons to stimulate students. Background information on poems very helpful for staff. Sample essays will be very useful to use with classes — something which a new specification always makes difficult because you don’t have anything to work with. It encourages students to think about poems in a more open manner, rather than simply there being a “right” answer — will be useful not only for the set poems but also the unseen. Clear scaffolding for the comparative element especially helpful for less able. Strong focus on less able students and how to engage them in studying poetry.' H HArvey, English Teacher and Independent Reviwer
'Very useful. With the advent of the new spec a helpful overview is gained with this resource. Particularly like the notes on each poem since they do illuminate some of the more obscure ideas of the poets. "In Paris With You" is very good!' R Loh, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
'I think this is very useful and very detailed with some great ideas. It is very adaptable to needs of individuals/groups. It seems to match the new GCSE very well and would be great as a resource to begin the new session with. I particularly liked the sample essays and the suggestion that students mark these &mdash a very good idea. The suggestions for lower ability are of particular use and something that is not often seen in study guides. Very comprehensive and very useful.' S Jones, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
