What do teachers say about this resource? (3141)

A brilliant resource that makes Dickens enjoyable and would challenge and interest students. The teachers introduction is particularly good, and sets exactly the right tone for a teacher who has not taught the text at A level before. A teacher would feel confident teaching Dickens from the beginning of this resource, and would trust the author to guide them through the text. The genre, style and form section is succinct yet detailed, and the character profiles are engaging and informative, supported by clear evidence from the text, modelling to a student how they should discuss the text. All of the sections could be set as independent reading or revision; the themes section is particularly strong. The resource is detailed and also promotes independent thought. The chapter summaries in particular do not just provide a dry set of information. The value of the guide is that it appears effortlessly skills based, addressing exam board specification and terminology, without losing students passion for the text.

On the whole the resource will enhance the teaching of this text and is meticulously well researched and very thorough. I liked the contexts section at the beginning which will be useful for the AQA syllabus which demands that texts should be placed in the context of Victorian preoccupations and concerns... It provides very detailed chapter summaries to ensure a very detailed knowledge of the text. The student activities are excellent.

The tasks in the Activities section are well thought out and should engage the student fully in the analytical process. Also, the section entitled Notes On Language is very well put together, with good use of quotes. The character profiles are also of great use... Again, the quality of references to the original text allows the characters to be understood. The section on the themes of Hard Times is also of a high standard and will allow for some excellent classroom discussion.

I particularly like the quantity of material... As a coursework help, this guide would be tremendously useful for those working independently.
