Poetry of the First World War

Worksheet and Presentation Pack for AQA A English Literature

A pack of teaching notes and student worksheets. The 15 poems have been carefully chosen to reflect different values and attitudes according to their timing in the war, the poets' experiences of war, and the gender of the poets. The pack includes investigative worksheets for students to complete during/after listening to each poem as well as tasks and activities for extended writing, research and group work. A set of detailed PowerPoint presentations are also supplied on CD-ROM.

The poems:

  • Tommy by Rudyard Kipling
  • Drummer Hodge by Thomas Hardy
  • The Soldier by Rupert Brooke
  • In Flanders Fields by John McCrae
  • Dead Man's Dump by Isaac Roseberg
  • Anthem for Doomed Youth by Wilfred Owen
  • When You See Millions Of The Mouthless Dead by Charles Sorley
  • The Fields of Flanders by Edith Nesbit
  • Spring in War-Time by Sara Teasdale
  • Lamplight by May Wedderburn Cannan
  • War Girls by Jessie Pope
  • Joining the Colours by Katharine Tynan
  • The Send Off by Wilfred Owen
  • The Cenotaph by Charlotte Mew
  • Elegy in a Country Churchyard by G. K. Chesterton

I thought this was a very thorough, detailed resource, and appropriate for the new specification as it looks at a range of poems and tackles them in-depth. It provides a great deal of material for the class and would certainly save a lot of time for the teacher. I would definitely purchase this resource.

Impressively interactive and varied tasks. The way the worksheets place emphasis on listening to the poems rather than just reading them is welcome. The PowerPoints were superb, especially the questions surrounding the poems... I'm just sorry that I won't be teaching this course next year as this is a really valuable resource!

What do teachers have to say about this resource? (2815)
'An excellent, extremely user friendly resource covering a wide variety of poets and poems. The assignments are varied, challenging and interesting enough to encourage students to respond enthusiastically. I particularly like the fact the female perspective is included - something which is often ignored in favour of looking only at the impact of war on males. I think students would really enjoy the extended research tasks and find them quick and easy to undertake because websites etc. are clearly given.' P Moore, English Teacher, Independent Reviewer
'This is a comprehensive, well-designed resource with an eclectic mix of WW1 poets and poetry including the work of women, often neglected in such a study. I particularly liked the layout and mix of activities for each - there are some interesting activities and an inspiring range of creative writing activities. This resource encourages students to reflect on the social and historical context of the texts and how this affected different members of society at different times during the four years of the war. There are a variety of points of view rather than just concentrating on the soldiers' perspectives.'P Lovelock, Assistant Head of English, Independent Reviewer
'I enjoyed the resource immensely. Detailed and well designed. I really like the variety of poems, varying from positive to negative about the war, it gave a huge spectrum of the poems that were written. Enhances learning by giving students an experience of what war was like for the soldiers and those not on the front line and made them able to empathise and sympathise in a well informed manner.' C Barker, English Teacher, Independent Reviewer
'I liked the presentation of the activities, they were visually interesting and user friendly. I am sure that the learners will enjoy working with them... Very user friendly & helps to aid understanding in a challenging genre of literature.' J. Gillespie, Head of English & Independent Reviewer
'My students enjoyed and gained confidence [from the PowerPoints] because many would get instant feedback and they were made to think.' L Bartlett, Head of English and ZigZag Customer
'Excellent resource... Especially with the multimedia aspect. Very student-friendly and, I imagine, a real boon to those teachers who are struggling to come to terms with the synoptic nature of the unit.' L Jenkins, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
'The writer has obviously put a lot of hard work and thorough research into this resource. I really enjoyed reviewing it and look forward to using it with my own pupils!' M Evans, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
'High quality. Very easy to see how it could be used and would be very welcome to many teachers!' M Courtney-Holt, English Examiner and Independent Reviewer
'Extremely detailed language analysis throughout. Constructive guidance and text-focused tasks.' K Bridges, English Teacher and Independent Reviewer
